It’s something we all have in common. It’s our biggest organ. Our first line of defence. It feels. It breathes. It grows. Constantly moving in all shapes and shades. Carrying us through this wonderful thing called life.
Tragically, every day in this sunburnt country, our skin is under attack. UVA and UVB light can cause mutations in our cells which turn into skin cancer. Something two thirds of Australians are likely to do battle with before the age of 75. Killing more people per capita than anywhere else in the world. Thankfully, over 95% of skin cancers can be successfully treated – if they’re detected early, which is what this movement is all about.
This thing started ten years ago after we lost our mate to melanoma. It was horrific. Something we never wanted to see happen to anyone else again. So, we focussed on something which wasn’t being done – to champion early detection.
Since then we’ve been passionately campaigning to raise the profile of skin checks here and around the world. To a point where at least three people a week are now writing to us about something they found which could have killed them if it wasn’t for our work. Initially, we focussed on men, who account for roughly 69% of Australia’s melanoma deaths. This campaign is called Beard Season, and it’s something we’re still going to proudly operate but as a part of something bigger.
Something for everyone under the sun. Something to rally together the support of corporates, medical organisations, communities, government and as many people as we can in this big, beautiful country, to be part of a ‘once in a generational opportunity’…
To launch a sustainable, targeted, national skin check program. Bringing specialists to where they’re needed most. Powered by the smartest minds, the best technology and people just like you who we hope are passionate about making a massive difference – to tackle our ‘national cancer’. Then, like other fine Aussie exports, we’ll proudly share our advances with the world.
